The VBAC Decision Aid was designed to help pregnant mothers navigate the complex decision of choosing between a vaginal birth and cesarean section if they've had a cesarean section for a previous child. Each birthing option has its own set of advantages and disadvantages that may or may not match the patient's preferences and values. The tool helps patients become more thoroughly acquainted with their preferences for birthing and also introduces them to the risks associated with each delivery option. Most of the questions in the computer program require the patient to select between two choices using a sliding bar to represent the degree of preference for one choice over the other. These pair-wise comparisons are then run through a unique statistical formula to produce a final recommendation of delivery preference. |

The user interface has been designed using Macromedia's Flash Pro application development environment which allows for a better user experience when interacting with a computer program. The interface promotes a level of engagement with the computer program that cannot be found in any other computer design environment. This results in potentially more accurate feedback from the patient. |

The VBAC Decision Aid is currently in a randomized controlled trial to determine the effectiveness of risk information delivery to patients recruited to use the tool. Over 160 patients will use VBAC during the course of this trial. Previous patient sessions have been performed with over 70 patients and have been instrumental in forming the current version of the VBAC Decision Aid. |
