A Robust, Electronic Obstetric Documentation System
The STORC OB Electronic Health Record is a complete obstetric charting tool with both inpatient and outpatient integration. The entire course of pregnancy can now be documented by nursing, physician, and midwifery staff in one complete system. Important information such as vaccination status or GBS status is easily accessible when the delivering mother enters labor and delivery. The system also spans multiple pregnancies and supports full printing capability for producing a complete paper chart.

Development
The STORC OB Health Record was developed in compliance with industry standards following a functionality requirements document that utilized the IEEE Guide to Software Requirement Specification (Std 830-1998). Substantial effort was invested to understand the communication patterns and complex interactions involved in managing a single obstetric patient. Interviews with staff nurses, family medicine physicians, OB/GYN physicians, perinatologists, pediatricians, midwives, patients and unit secretaries were performed to truly understand the process of perinatal health care. The user interface was designed with four major guiding principles:

  1. Clinicians are pressed for time.
  2. Researchers need complete and accurate data.
  3. The interface must be easy to use.
  4. The interface must be commercial grade, HIPAA compliant, and must produce professional looking output.
The STORC OB Health Record has been developed in the Borland Delphi 7.0 environment and is supported by a Microsoft SQL Server database.
